For the purpose of this article, we will be focusing on your roof. After reading this we hope you will be better informed about roof damage and what to do about it.
Being a roofing contractor we have seen the best and the worst of residential roofing. First, your roof is the first lines of defense from the outside elements and is the last thing that most homeowners think about. This is understandable as it is one of those out-of-sight out-of-mind situations. Almost like looking at the roof of your car, you know its there, but you expect that it is doing its job. Unfortunately, there are many elements to your homes roof that need to be taken into consideration. The simplest thing is that your roof will not last forever. Most homes have asphalt shingles and with some maintenance and good luck on your side, they may give you 20 years before needing to be completely replaced.
Another misconception about roofing is that if you do not have a visible hole in your roof, you do not have roof damage. While a visible hole is roof damage, there are many other things that constitute roof damage too. For instance, if you have damaged or missing shingles you have roof damage. Rule of thumb is anything that can compromise the integrity of your roofing structure is considered damage and should be repaired as soon as possible.
With that said you may be wondering how does your roof even get damaged, glad you asked..lol. Age is one way. Your shingles can get worn out and start to crack, curl and basically give up the good fight. If you live near trees, debris can strike your roof puncturing or loosening your shingles causing damage. High winds can blow roofing elements away and last but not least, hail damage.
Just wanted to speak more on hail damage as this something that is not easily detected but, can cause major damage if not address. Most people do not think much about hail when it is coming down, but you may want to give it another thought if you are a homeowner. Small hail, will not do to much damage, but quarter sized or larger will most likely cause damage. Just think about it, a hard object falling from thousands of feet from the sky often in clusters. Yes, this will cause damage at some point. Again, it will not cause the type of damage you may think and to the untrained eye it may look like dirt marks. On the contrary, the damage actually happened on the under layers of the roof and could cause you to need a roof replacement.
This may have been a lot to take in, but the most important thing you can do for your home is to be proactive and schedule an annual roof inspection. In the same manner, if you hear about large hail falling in your area, schedule a roof inspection. Mpact Roofing is always here for any questions you may have.
